More Money for College in Stimulus

During last nights press conference, President Obama made an important point about college tuition. Something that is probably important to all readers of this blog is how to make college affordable as the economy slows. Under the new stimulus, students will recieve a tax credit to help us get through these tough times. Here is the text from the speech:
When passed, this plan will ensure that Americans who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own can receive greater unemployment benefits and continue their health care coverage.

Obama Takes the Campaign to the People

Yesterday President Obama brought his fight to pass the stimulus bill to the people.  After a speech in Elkhart Indiana, a town that has more than twice the national average of unemployment.  Then last night the President addressed the American people to talk to them about the gravity of the situation.

CDNY's new Regional Directors

The College Democrats of New York have two new Regional Directors for the new semester. Max Weiss is now the Central New York Director, and Andrew Desmarais is the Director for the North Country region. Regional Directors act as representatives of their region's chapters, help maintain ties between chapters and other Democratic organizations in their areas, and help foster new chapters. Congratulations Andrew and Max!

State of the Republican Opposition

With President Obama reaching out to Republicans to help pass the bailout package, we are seeing the beginning of the bi partisan era in Washington.  As many Republicans are hearing from President Obama more in the short time he has been president then they heard from President Bush in eight years, many Republicans are still trying to stand strong in opposition to the President.  They prefer to take the side of the rich executives that continue to buy the corporate jets and continue to fight against measures to help stabilize the economy. President Elect Barack Obama has announced that Senator Hillary Clinton will be serving as the next Secretary of State. This is a big move for Senator Clinton. With the senator leaving her Senate seat, however, a spot will now be opened that will be picked by Governor Paterson. Many contenders have been named, including almost every female congresswomen, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, and every political rival to Governor Paterson.

Clinton to accept Sec. State ?

The Guradian is reporting that Hillary Clinton will be accepting the role of Sec. of State.  This is the first major position that Obama will be filling. It seems that with this appointment, Obama is trying to mend the fences with his different opponents. This is a major appointment for both NY and the country. Clinton would bring experience and a fresh approach to the role of Sec of State.

Dean to step Down as DNC head

The Washington Post is reporting that Howard Dean is not going to run for a second term as chairmen. Dean, always a fan of the netroots and the youths, Dean will sorely be missed as DNC chair. Under chairmen Dean, the Democratic party has been able to expand into all fifty states and have made us competitive in states that have traditionally been red. With this change, the path is now open for President Obama to put a loyalist into the position. We can only hope that his pick is as good to the netroots and youths as Gov. Dean was.
