College Democrats of New York ready to end Tedisco and Steele’s Misery
With almost two weeks to go until the special election in the NY-20 Congressional district, the college Democrats all over the state of New York are mobilizing to help elect Democrat Scott Murphy. The special election to fill Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s vacated Congressional seat will be on Tuesday March 31.
The race in the NY-20 features hometown hero Scott Murphy facing off against Assembly minority leader James Tedisco (who did not live in the district before the race started). While there are 70,000 more voters registered Republican instead of Democrat in this Congressional district, Murphy has continued to close the gap since he became the party nominee less than two months ago. While only three weeks ago, Murphy was down by 12-percentage points, he has been steadly gaining ground, and most recent Siena poll conducted on March 10 puts Murphy only down four points.
The College Democrats of New York will be making a big push to knock Tedisco out of the race during the Get Out The Vote weekend of March 28 and 29. Students will be carpooling and busing into the district to continue to affect the change we need in Congress. Over the next two weeks, college democrat members located in the NY-20 and nearby areas will be working hard every day to get Murphy elected. Over 200 students are expected to participate in the campaign invasion.
During the campaign, Tedisco has repeatedly refused to answer whether he would vote for the stimulus package, despite widespread popularity in his district for the bill. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is pinning his chairmanship hopes on winning the NY-20; a loss could spell Mr. Steele’s resignation due to lack of confidence. The College Democrats of New York will be glad to end their misery.

“The CBO found the Recovery Act is responsible for 600,000 to 1.6 million jobs and has raised GDP by 1.2 to 3.2 percent. Without the Recovery Act these jobs would have either disappeared or never existed in the first place and this positive economic growth would not have been possible.
“Our economy still has a long way to go and we will not rest until everyone who wants a job can find one, but the economy is no longer in a free-fall. Democrats in Congress showed real leadership by supporting the Recovery Act. Unfortunately, Republicans - the Party of NO -refused to offer an alternative. They stood on the sidelines as President Obama and Congressional Democrats took the steps necessary to reverse the economic decline they inherited after eight years of failed Republican economic policies. Now, by cheering for the Act’s failure, the GOP remains on the wrong side of history. As President Obama and Democrats continue to take steps to strengthen our economy, it’s time for Republicans to stop saying 'No', quit playing politics and start working with us on behalf of American families and workers.” Read More...
