The Special Election is Coming Down to the Wire

Every day, the Congressional race in the NY-20 Congressional District between Republican James Tedisco and Democrat Scott Murphy is getting closer and closer. Just this past Tuesday, a report by Rothenberg Political moved the race to "toss-up."

The March 31 special election has featured quick campaign action on both sides of the isle, with national money from both the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the Republican counterpart pouring in thousands of dollars into the race, along with support from special interest groups. The NY-20 special election is being called because Kirsten Gillibrand took over Hillary Clinton's Senate seat, leaving a vacancy in Congress.

The biggest news from the Rothenberg Political Report was from an internal DCCC poll that had Tedisco at 44% and Murphy at 37%. This is great news because over two months ago, Murphy was down in the polls by almost 20%, and less than two weeks ago, Murphy was down by 12%. Now he's only down by 7% and is closing the gap fast. It will certainly be a race to the finish as the clock ticks down to that March 31 election date.

Meanwhile, the College Democrats of New York are organizing quickly just in time for the special election. We are working closely now with the New York State Young Democrats to coordinate carpooling into the district for students across the state who want to knock on doors during the Get Out The Vote weekend right before election date. In the next few weekends left before the election, we will be having students make phone calls to voters into the district, urging them that Tedisco is a flip-flopper and is afraid to take a stance on issues like voting on the stimulus bill. Murphy has lived in the NY-20 district and knows the people of his district, which is more than we can say for Tedisco who just moved there only weeks ago.

The College Democrats of New York and our Democratic Party needs your help to send a loud a clear message to the rest of our country that we are heading in the right direction, and that even a district with a large Republican voter registration advantage, can go Democratic.

“As the CBO analysis shows, the Recovery Act has lessened the effects of the worst recession in a generation and is beginning to help turn things around.

“The CBO found the Recovery Act is responsible for 600,000 to 1.6 million jobs and has raised GDP by 1.2 to 3.2 percent. Without the Recovery Act these jobs would have either disappeared or never existed in the first place and this positive economic growth would not have been possible.

“Our economy still has a long way to go and we will not rest until everyone who wants a job can find one, but the economy is no longer in a free-fall. Democrats in Congress showed real leadership by supporting the Recovery Act. Unfortunately, Republicans - the Party of NO -refused to offer an alternative. They stood on the sidelines as President Obama and Congressional Democrats took the steps necessary to reverse the economic decline they inherited after eight years of failed Republican economic policies. Now, by cheering for the Act’s failure, the GOP remains on the wrong side of history. As President Obama and Democrats continue to take steps to strengthen our economy, it’s time for Republicans to stop saying 'No', quit playing politics and start working with us on behalf of American families and workers.” Read More...
