Campus Vigil to be Held for Binghamton Shooting

Last Friday, Binghamton was engulfed in perhaps the city's worst tragedy in recent memory, as a gunman burst into an immigrant center in Binghamton, NY, opening fire and killing 13 people, including himself. The shooting rampage, which involved a brief hostage takeover, made national news coverage in its tragedy.

The shooting occurred on a day when students were leaving the city to head for Spring Break. The shooting occurred in an area of Binghamton populated with student housing, not to mention happening across the street from the local Binghamton high school. Students return to Binghamton on Monday April 13, with classes resuming on Tuesday. A massive campus-wide vigil is already scheduled, with more than 500 students already RSVPing on facebook their attendance at the vigil. Several facebook events have been set up for the vigil online, along with multiple email alerts being sent to students to rally with the community in support of the victims.

The vigil will take place at 7pm on Tuesday, April 14th, in front of the Fountain, near the lecture hall building. Information about the vigils can be viewed with the links below:

“As the CBO analysis shows, the Recovery Act has lessened the effects of the worst recession in a generation and is beginning to help turn things around.

“The CBO found the Recovery Act is responsible for 600,000 to 1.6 million jobs and has raised GDP by 1.2 to 3.2 percent. Without the Recovery Act these jobs would have either disappeared or never existed in the first place and this positive economic growth would not have been possible.

“Our economy still has a long way to go and we will not rest until everyone who wants a job can find one, but the economy is no longer in a free-fall. Democrats in Congress showed real leadership by supporting the Recovery Act. Unfortunately, Republicans - the Party of NO -refused to offer an alternative. They stood on the sidelines as President Obama and Congressional Democrats took the steps necessary to reverse the economic decline they inherited after eight years of failed Republican economic policies. Now, by cheering for the Act’s failure, the GOP remains on the wrong side of history. As President Obama and Democrats continue to take steps to strengthen our economy, it’s time for Republicans to stop saying 'No', quit playing politics and start working with us on behalf of American families and workers.” Read More...
