Campus Vigil to be Held for Binghamton Shooting

Last Friday, Binghamton was engulfed in perhaps the city's worst tragedy in recent memory, as a gunman burst into an immigrant center in Binghamton, NY, opening fire and killing 13 people, including himself. The shooting rampage, which involved a brief hostage takeover, made national news coverage in its tragedy.

On the Ground in Binghamton, NY--latest on shooting

Just as I was about to leave for my Spring break on Saturday, as a senior at Binghamton University, a shooting took place this afternoon in downtown Bnighamton.

To crush some rumors floating around, the shooting was NOT near Binghamton University. It was in downtown Binghamton, about 20 minutes from the University.

College Democrats of New York ready to end Tedisco and Steele’s Misery

With almost two weeks to go until the special election in the NY-20 Congressional district, the college Democrats all over the state of New York are mobilizing to help elect Democrat Scott Murphy. The special election to fill Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s vacated Congressional seat will be on Tuesday March 31.

The Special Election is Coming Down to the Wire

Every day, the Congressional race in the NY-20 Congressional District between Republican James Tedisco and Democrat Scott Murphy is getting closer and closer. Just this past Tuesday, a report by Rothenberg Political moved the race to "toss-up."

Students in Upstate New York Rally against Governor Paterson's Tuition Increase

One of Governor David Paterson's poor attempts to close the budget gap is to raise SUNY tuition by $600 for this year, which is being called a tax on tuition. While SUNY schools will collect money from this tuition hike, state funding will be reduced by the same amount. In effect, this hike will not go towards improving state schools, but would rather have students pay more for their education without receiving any benefits from it.

SUNY Students Unite to Fight Tuition Increase

Just got word that the SUNY lobby day to fight the tuition tax on students will be held on Tuesday, March 10, 2009 from 1130 AM until 5 PM in Albany. The event is being called SUNYpalooza and is seeking to represent all 64 SUNY campuses.

This lobbying effort is important to keeping public education in this state affordable and telling the governor that SUNY is not the place to go to look for tax money.

Governor Paterson in Opinion Polling Freefall

A new opinion poll released by Marist Polling shows some troubling numbers for Governor Paterson.

“As the CBO analysis shows, the Recovery Act has lessened the effects of the worst recession in a generation and is beginning to help turn things around.

“The CBO found the Recovery Act is responsible for 600,000 to 1.6 million jobs and has raised GDP by 1.2 to 3.2 percent. Without the Recovery Act these jobs would have either disappeared or never existed in the first place and this positive economic growth would not have been possible.

“Our economy still has a long way to go and we will not rest until everyone who wants a job can find one, but the economy is no longer in a free-fall. Democrats in Congress showed real leadership by supporting the Recovery Act. Unfortunately, Republicans - the Party of NO -refused to offer an alternative. They stood on the sidelines as President Obama and Congressional Democrats took the steps necessary to reverse the economic decline they inherited after eight years of failed Republican economic policies. Now, by cheering for the Act’s failure, the GOP remains on the wrong side of history. As President Obama and Democrats continue to take steps to strengthen our economy, it’s time for Republicans to stop saying 'No', quit playing politics and start working with us on behalf of American families and workers.” Read More...
